Apple jumps to third place in worldwide mobile phone shipments:

Apple’s huge iPhone sales numbers from its latest quarterly results and the overall success of its iPhone 4S helped it grow its mobile phone business by 128.4 percent year-over-year in the fourth quarter of 2011, according to a new IDC report. That was good enough to help the company climb to third place overall in worldwide smartphone shipments, leapfrogging both ZTE and LG Electronics.

Apple’s 37 million fourth quarter iPhone shipments were a far cry from the market leaders, however. Nokia still ruled the roost with 113.5 million handset shipments, while Samsung edged closer to grabbing the top spot with a 20 percent increase compared to the previous year, to a total of 97.6 million units shipped. Samsung succeeded by growing its smartphone sales, but also by increasing its feature phone shipment numbers in an otherwise soft market for those devices.

While Apple was the biggest gainer percentage-wise during the quarter, LG suffered the biggest drop,with a negative 42.2 percent change compared to the same period in 2010. Its total shipments were at 17.7 million for the year, which is on par with 2007 levels. LG definitely felt the hit of the waning feature phone market and was unable to do much to impress consumers with its smartphones, either.

Apple also ranked third overall in terms of mobile phone shipments throughout the whole calendar year thanks to its fourth quarter results, with 93.2 iPhone shipments and year-over-year growth of 96.2 percent.

IDC predicts that the mobile phone market will continue to experience double-digit growth, despite only seeing 11.1 percent growth year-over-year in 2011, versus 18.7 percent growth between 2009 and 2010.

iPad 3 Announcement and Release Coming in March?:

A new report today from Mackotera.jp claims that Apple will both announce and launch its next-generation iPad, presumed to be called either the iPad 2S or the iPad 3, during the month of March. This comes just a few weeks after the blog claimed that Apple would be announcing the iPad 3 alongside iOS 5.1 at an event taking place at some point in early February with a release coming in March.

All along, March has been the front-runner with various reports indicating that Apple would be following in the footsteps of its release of the iPad 2, which was announced and launched in March of 2011.

The report also claims that Apple is going to be hosting some sort of event in February although Jim Dalrymple from The Loop says that the February event will not be taking place.

So right now, all signs point to a launch in March which means those of you that have been thinking about buying a new iPad, will probably want to hold off for a few weeks in order to see what Apple has up its sleeve.

Speaking of that, the iPad 3 is rumored to be a quad-core device, featuring Apple’s A6 processor, and it’s also speculated to have a high-resolution Retina Display along with high speed 4G LTE data capabilities.

Sounds pretty good right?

Luckily, we should only have to wait a couple of weeks to find out if the rumors are too good to be true.

Combine multiple feeds into one. A Facebook story.

So this is the story. I want to find a way to combine several different feeds (my blogs, my calendar, etc) into one so that I could post them into Facebook without using 3rd party apps and too much hassle.

Services like friend feed for example or twitterfeed lets yu combine all sort of different services into one, and both of this exemples support facebook. But my main problem was that the information they show on this facebbok integration was very limited and I wanted my facebook reader to have more information about my posts directly on my facebook wall.

Edit: (Doesn't work that well ) After some searching I found out that Facebook notes application supports import a feed into its nots and it actually show a quite good preview information and if you click on the note it shows the full post and link to the original blog post, calendar or whatever feed you import. Main problem. It only support the import of one feed.

So I thought what if there was a simple way to combine multiple feeds into one. Well there is. After just a few minutes of searching I found a simple solution. It’s called Yahoo Pipes. I’m not going to give a tutorial on how to setup Pipes, since there are plenty of them around. Still i will leave you the link to the tutorial i used myself. I think it’s a good one, and quite clear.

Edit: This showed up to be really slow and it doesn't update as fast and reliable as one would wan't. Looking for alternatives

Edit2: Well I ended up using 2 facebook apps instead. Networked blogs and Ical to events, which basically fits my needs.

UMID M2 possible entry level not that appealing !!

First news about new UMID M2 entry level model, showed up at UMPCPortal.com, and they really don’t look that appealing,

“Entry-level price for the UMID M2 will be $499 and will be with the 1.2Ghz CPU, 512MB, 8GB SSD, Win XP and no camera.”

This is what I hate about these companies.. they do a good step forward but 2 seconds later they do 5 backwards. Its good that they fixed M1 problems, its a sign that they are listening. but its a bit stupid if you ask me to mess up with hardware specs. when they are good as they are. such a small ssd is just nonsense and 512mb of memory on x86 device coming out on the end of 2009? 512 could be ENOUGH for XP if one tries hard but when, for example, drivers are not even optimized for hardware and take 180mb of memory like the GMA500 ones take..... hmmm think twice UMID, users will not be pleased.

I really hope they reconsider the specs for entry level, at least on these 2 points SSD and RAM, or at least, hoping for a “middle” level model to show up.

New UMID M2 shows up at IDF09. Looking good!

New UMID model M2 shows up at IDF09. I have to say I’m very excited about this new model. I own the first UMID, and its a great device, but as everyone knows it has some problems here and there, mainly the build quality, the screen angle, and those idiot dongles. Well these have been now solved. Not sure about the build quality, but screen angle know looks much much better now, and they included a “normal” USB connector and standard phones connector.

About the specs, the device will keep the 4.8 inch screen with 1024x600 res. They expect to push out two versions one with 1.2ghz processor (Atom Z515) and 1.6Ghz (Atom Z30). Memory has been upgraded to 1ghz, and looks like they plan to release it with Windows 7 (basic, suppose). They also plan to include a optical mouse with right and left click buttons, both right and left next to the screen. Same keyboard and Camera (1.3MP). No info about SSD size or 3g models.

Price and availability, the new UMID is expected with the starting price of $499, final user price, on the Q4 2009 (November / December).

Not much more to say about it right know, just that I cant wait to put my hands on one. :) Any sponsors out there? :)

3M DI-NOC Carbon Fiber Vinyl Sheet.

Following Jkk, from Jkkmobile.com steps, I’ve too got my self some carbon fiber vinyl sheet from 3M and apply it to my some of my devices. These 3M DI-NOC carbon fiber sheets are very high quality, and easy to apply, no high skill required Just needs a bit of time, patience, and and a blow drier :) Yes!!, the vinyl is very moldable and stretchable using a bit of heat… useful specially to give a good finished look to corners and other non flat surfaces.

I have been using this set of devices as my mobile kit, during my busy past weeks. I'm so happy with it that I think I wont need to change anything any time soon.

Umid M1 as a sort of productivity device. Productivity is a very vague term when regarding to mobile computers but for me is update my web page, calendar, reading news, Twitter, faceboo, editing some documents, e-mailing, and so on. Keyboard is small and takes a bit of time to learn but after a while you can really type on it.
HTC Touch diamond 2. This my main and now, only phone. Besides calls, sms etc, I use it to quick e-mail checking. Twitter, post quick photos, and casually web browsing (the new on screen keyboard is not that bad for small typing)
Mifi 2353 - My mobile internet router. I used to share internet with the two previous devices (My phone contract has a crappy data plan) and sometimes share internet with friends and colleagues at the opera house / singers that need a quick access from their laptops (I'm a nice guy.)

I has been a while since I post anything here. This is due to have been very busy with work.
As many of you know I'm Opera singer and this is one of those times of the year that rehearsals, performances, etc, all get on top of each other, leaving very little time for me do anything else.

Still here is a small list of articles / activities I've planned.

Full Mifi testing using different devices, and situations. I have been testing it deeply with my HTC Touch Diamond 2 Phone, with UMID M1 and also my netbook.
Some videos of real life usage on some of my devices, on my daily professional activities. If you follow me on twitter or other services I've been doing some small tests.
Article on how far, in my opinion you can get with a Windows mobile smartphone as your portable internet device, only using stock and freeware applications. A big thanks for forum.xda-developers.com "ROM Chefs" for the amazing optimized ROM I have been testing make the usage of my phone a much pleasant experience.

Samsung NC10 - Internal 3G "Easy" mod.

Some people have been looking for a internal 3g mod on the NC10. Because I'm still confident enough with the soldering iron to start soldering small parts like mini-pci connectors or small wires. Here is what I think is an easy mod if you really want internal 3g on your NC10. Not the most practical one, but easy.

What I have done is, I have used a spare Novatel Wireless, Expedite EU850D PCI Express Mini Card Embedded Module, 3g modem I had and replaced the internal Wifi card by the 3g Card, and for Wifi i will from now on will use a small USB dongle from buffallo (world smallest some people say :) ) Buffalo WLI-UC-GN Wireless N Compact USB 2.0.

First thing you have to do is open up your NC10. Take all the screws on the bottom and then, gently with use of a old plastic credit card type card, take the bottom cover. Start it by inserting one of the corners of the card next to one of the usb ports or next to the SD slot, and then slide slowly all around the netbook.

After it's open remove the wifi card. Again gently remove the two antenna conectors and replace the WIFI card by the 3g modem, insert you SIM Card (This is own big downside of this mod, you need to open the entire bottom of the netbook to change SIM... of course you can allways cut a hole on the buttom but that I leave to your choice! :) ). Put the bottom cover back on and start Windows.

From now one is pretty much simple. Just install the drivers and software (If you get a no radio message, just activate radio but going to Mobilink software menu and chose "activate radio").
You also have to creat a profile for your 3g carrier. Again, go to menu, profile manager, and create a new profile. The setting for this depend on you provider, you're on your own here!

Do the same for usb wifi dongle....

And... that's it. Enjoy your internal 3g.

P.S. You can also use Buffalo as a wireless router. The little fellow has dual mode (clienter and router) software controlled, so that you can share your 3g connection with up to 5 devices using it (not ad-hoc), in a sort of a mifi way! :)

Yesterday I got the new and small Buffallo WLI-UC-GN USB wireless Adapter, and....
The old saying "Great things come in small packages" couldn't be more true in this case.

Originally I bought this because I thout it would a good solution to have WIFI on my Aigo MID which has XP Installed, but after un-boxing it I found out that is more that a simple wireless adapter, in fact, it can be used to create a Wireless ROUTER.

Yes that's right. The small guy has in fact two modes, Clint Mode and Router Mode.
This mean you can use it to setup a small and portable wireless network.
I have installed it on my aigo and tested both modes.
Client works flawless with my home network. I advise not to install the included Wireless Manager, just install drivers and use windows one. As usual with this type of software is bit "crapware" and pointless.
Router mode also works amazingly well. Setup was made in less than a minute. The only thing you need is to set your network name, type of protection you want and your password and thats it.
Because my Aigo has a 3g card inclued, basically what i have now is a 3G Wifi Router. I know this not the most practical of situations but is always fun, and after some tests, the Aigo lasted a bit more than 3 hours with screen off, and normal web navigation, meaning, 2 or 3 videos loaded from Youtube, and normal web page / e-mail access.

All software is included in package, also light and easy to install. (mine came in chinese only but was easy solved by downloading the English version from Buffallo's webpage.).

If you have an Aigo with XP and want an easy "cheap" solution to have Wifi working i strongly advise yo to get one.
As you can see from the images bellow it's really small and looks great on the Aigo.

Also If you have a Netbook with 3g card and would like to have a small portable network, for the road this can also be a good and cheap solution for you.
You can get the adpter from the ebay seller on my previous post. I can easly recommend him. Great comunication and fast shipping (took 4 or 5 days to for arrive from China to Lisbon)

I will post later today or tomorrow images and maybe video of the working Aigo 3g wifi Router itself ;)

A few days ago I got my new UMID M1.
Just a few minutes after I start using it I noticed that the USB adapter was not working so good (this was a big surprise since they are so well built (sarcasm)).
After a few minutes of Web/ Ebay searching i found this:

It's a small cable and it works like a charm. Much much better than orignal adpter specially if you use larger or heavy usb adapters. I have a Sandisk U3 cruiser PEN Disk which used to make the stupid adpater to bend..
I also like this cable more because you can adjust the plugged in devices the way you want around your table your lap or whatever....Instead of having a huge thing coming out of the UMID and making unecessary weight on the device and mini USB port.

In my opinion this is what UMID should have done in the first place. Or even simple, add a NORMAL usb port. Its not like, they are saving huge amounts of space. They are just making users life more difficult.

I will write a more detailed review and first days of usage impression soon.

RUNCORE PRO IV 64GB SSD First Impressions.

My new RUNCORE PRO IV 64GB SSD just arrived a few hours ago from Mydigitaldiscount.com, and here are my first impressions.

I have installed the SSD on my Samsung NC10 and i have to say I'm really impressed by it. Boot time is really fast, about 20 to 25 seconds from totally shut down to full booted windows. Resume from hibernation is also amazing less than ten seconds, and i have 2gb on my system, pretty impressive.
Overall performance also increased. Everything seems more responsive now and programs run much much faster. I haven't had time yet to make more deep tests but, i've noticed that, specially Outlook 2007 which has a quite large (about 1gb) off-line file, it used to take like from 5 to 10 seconds for it to be fully usable but now, on less than 5 it's ready. Have also notice some performance improvements on Firefox, which now launches almost immediately after I click on it. Pages also load faster even on heavy loaded flash site like Engadget.com, wich fully loads in 2 or 3 seconds....
More and better detailed tests soon.

Battery is also giving me about 30 minutes more than it used to with original HDD but this still needs to be checked f0r accurate results!

For now here is a performance comparison using CrystalDiskMark:
(Both HDD and SSD have exactly the operating system configuration. They have been cloned!)

If you don't need huge amounts of space on your netbook, I strongly suggest you to get a Runcore SSD . It really makes a difference on these kind of devices.

It's exactly the same device as before, and it comes with midlinux, the only difference is that, due to some minor hardware changes is now fully compatible with XP. Meaning that everything works including Wifi.

EVE-Online on Netbooks

Recently I started playing this on-line game called EVE-Online (www.evenonline.com) . Normally i don't play games, in fact I haven't played any computer game for more than 10 years, but this one really caught my attention. It's a really interesting strategy game and really makes you think to play it....
Well it's not to talk about the game that I'm writing this post. In fact the reason is that, I'm trying to find out if and which Netbooks you can play EVE on.

I have tried to run it on my two netbooks, Asus Eee 901 and Samsung NC10 and it actually works, BUT, the performance is really poor (actually runs faster on the NC10 don't know why system exactly the same?!?!). So what I'm trying to find out is which Netbooks would actually run this game with a reasonable performance.

My guess is that, it must run really nice on devices like Everun Note or the Asus N10J because one is a dual core (the Everun) and both have dedicated 3d graphics controller. But what about the new Aton n280 / GN40? Is there any performance improvements over the "old" n270? What about the new "Zxx" series?....
I Know that Nebooks were not made to play games but, If you play the game and have any of these netbooks / umpcs please share your experiences, post comments, write me an e-mail... you name it!

Lets see how far these "babies" can go... :) Maybe it's a really crazy idea, but Netbooks are very portable and many in a "Always with you" form factor so, why not used them to kill free or boring times , and/or if you don't nothing better to do... play some EVE?

Learning how to solder - Part 1

Yes, I have decided to learn how to solder, with all the fine mod's showing all the time for umpcs, netbooks, etc.. this might come handy one day. (not even thinking on trying anything like that sometime soon, need to build much more confidence first!)

Here is my first soldering attempt on a test kit board.

Not bad, I think, for someone that has never picked up a soldering iron since high-school...long long time ago!

Runcore SATA 16gb SSD for EEE PC is here. First impressions.

All I can say is that, it's here and it's GOOOD!

The 16gb SDD from Runcore, for my "old" EEE 901, arrived today from Mydigitaldiscount.com. Have been testing it all day and so far I'm very impressed, it really makes and huge difference in overall performance. Windows XP Boots quite fast, about 20/25 secs and i haven't noticed almost any slow down on the system due to disk activity. The little guy really hands it very well to the tasks given. Almost any application, like Firefox, Tweetdeck or Outlook, show just immediately after you run them. Again I'm very Impressed.

Thanks Runcore for this great product.

Real life testing on the next couple of days, so more on this soon.....

Acording to UMPCFever.com, forum members can send their Aigo's to a support center in HK, and for the amount of HK$150, they will do the necessary hardware changes/upgrade to make wifi work on Windows XP. Apparently this amount includes both upgrade and shipping costs.

This is good news for for the Asian users, and certainly a big effort by UMPCFever, since this looks to be co-organized by Umpcfever and Aigo HK. Not sure if the upgrade is also limited to local forum members dough....

Don't get your hopes down, not all is lost!... Hopefully instructions on how to make it yourself will be available soon (good source). But I can tell you in advance is not going to be as easy as 1 2 3... :)
